Categories, meh

an un-categorized life

TAGS will go here when I implement them

This post also follows on the Symphony debut post in concert with the no tags post. Its not quite true to say that I don’t use categories. I have a few. There are 4 categories that are holdovers from the old Wordpress centric design. There are another two categories that I’ve created for this implementation: Long and Short{ref1}.

Categories suffer much the same as tags. You either have an abundance of imagination and a corresponding amount of categories for every aspect of your blog or you have an incomprehensible dearth. You’re writing a post about a recent trip to the dentist. Does that post go in the medical category? Is it the only post in that category? Maybe you should just toss this one shot in the life category. Or would it make more sense to put it in your misc category (which just happens to be your largest category)?

It all comes back to searching

Ultimately, the most reliable method we have for finding something is searching, is Google. And, in the end, most of the readers I have come from Google. I can count my hands the number of people that used a tag or category or even an archive page to find something on my site in the last 2 years.

Simplify, simplify.
